NHGRI's Green Elected to Membership in the Association of American Physicians
National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Scientific Director Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D. is a 2007 inductee into the prestigious Association of American Physicians (AAP), an organization of leading U.S. physician scientists. He was inducted at the organization's annual meeting, April 13-15, 2007, in Chicago. Dr. Green is also director of the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center [nisc.nih.gov] and chief of NHGRI's Genome Technology Branch.
Dr. Green joined NHGRI in 1994 and became scientific director in 2002. Previously, he completed a pathology residency and postdoctoral research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, where he also was an assistant professor until 1994. He earned a B.S. degree in 1981 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in 1987 from Washington University in St. Louis.
At NHGRI, Dr. Green's research focuses on mapping, sequencing and interpreting vertebrate genomes. He made cutting-edge and strategic contributions to the Human Genome Project, which was completed in 2003.
In the area of comparative genomics, Dr. Green and fellow NHGRI researchers generate genomic sequences from large sets of diverse species for use in decoding the human genome sequence. In the arena of human genetics, Dr. Green's research group has been responsible for the identification of several genes associated with human genetic disease, including those implicated in hereditary deafness, vascular disease and neurological disorders. These discoveries have provided new opportunities to study the function of individual genes and the proteins they encode; to define the pathological consequences of disease-associated mutations; and to generate animal models of these disorders.
The AAP was founded in 1885 to advance scientific and practical medicine, promote collegial connections among physicians and encourage the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Dr. Green is among 55 new members elected to AAP in 2007 whose outstanding scientific achievements have improved patient care. AAP is widely regarded as an influential forum for the generation and dissemination of biomedical knowledge. Its membership has included Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine.
Other NHGRI investigators who have been honored by membership in AAP include Leslie G. Biesecker, M.D.; Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D.; William A. Gahl, M.D., Ph.D.; Pu Paul Liu, M.D., Ph.D.; Paul Meltzer, M.D., Ph.D.; and Maximilian Muenke, M.D.
