Genomics in Medicine Lecture Series resumes

Daniel Kastner, M.D., NHGRI scientific director and inflammatory disease expert, will lead the line-up of speakers as the Genomics in Medicine Lecture Series resumes in September. Established in December 2011, the series is aimed at enhancing how health-care professionals' understand the intersection between genomics and medicine.

Five new lectures are planned through February 2013, each taking place at Suburban Hospital's lower level auditorium at 8600 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda, Md. The series is sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with Suburban Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

At 8 a.m., Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, Dr. Kastner will present a talk Horror Autoinflammaticus: Adventures in the Genomics of Inflammation. The systemic autoinflammatory diseases are a relatively recently recognized group of disorders, characterized by seemingly unprovoked inflammation without the high titer autoantibodies or antigen-specific T-lymphocytes seen in autoimmune diseases. Dr. Kastner's talk will describe the clinical features of the autoinflammatory diseases, and will present some of the recent advances in understanding their genetics, pathophysiology and treatment.

All are welcome to the hour-long lecture, all of which are scheduled on the first Friday of the month begining at 8 a.m. There is no lecture is scheduled for October 2012.
