Genomic Medicine Working Group

The NHGRI Genomic Medicine Working Group arose from genomic medicine implementation efforts outlined by the 2011 NHGRI Strategic Plan and continued in the 2020 NHGRI Strategic Plan. The working group will continue to assist the National Advisory Council on Human Genome Research in advising NHGRI on research needed to evaluate and move genomics into routine medical practice.  The working group will help accomplish this by identifying existing gaps and future opportunities that need to be explored to help generate the evidence for genomic medicine implementation. One way this is accomplished is by organizing genomic medicine meetings that bring together genomics researchers, clinicians, and other experts involved with the implementation of genomic medicine programs. The meetings focus on issues surrounding the adoption of genomic medicine and help shape future projects in genomic medicine.

In addition to planning the genomic medicine meetings on timely themes, the working group provides guidance to NHGRI on genomic medicine implementation by reviewing current progress; identifying research, education, and implementation gaps and approaches for filling them; publicizing key advances; facilitating collaborations and coordination within and outside NIH, and promoting long-term availability of genomic resources.
