Scientific Review Officer, Scientific Review Branch, Division of Extramural Operations

The Scientific Review Officer (SRO) in NHGRI’s Scientific Review Branch (SRB) in the Division of Extramural Operations (DEO) will join an experienced and collaborative team of five scientific review officers and two program specialists, responsible for conducting and managing initial peer review for research, career development and training applications assigned to NHGRI. These applications span many topics in genomic sciences, genomic medicine, technology development, data science, computational biology, biostatistics, and ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics research. The SRO will interact with scientists from many disciplines as they create panels of reviewers, who evaluate the scientific and technical merit of applications submitted to NHGRI. The SRO will also participate in SRB, DEO, and NHGRI staff meetings, as well as NIH-wide committees or working groups, as appropriate. The SRO helps review Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) before publication, formalizing and implementing changes in procedures, work methods, processes, policies, and peer review requirements.

NHGRI will use the global recruitment process to fill this position. The official series and grade for this Health Science Administrator, Scientific Review Officer position will be GS-601-12/13/14 or GS-601-15. The position will be remote or located in Montgomery County, MD.

Candidates should demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills, with expertise in the following areas: genomic sciences, genomic medicine, technology development, computational biology, data science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and ethical, legal, and social implications of genomics research.  

NHGRI especially encourages applications from scientists with expertise in data science or biostatistics, and those who have experience with the NIH peer review process. No prior training as a review officer is required.

Salaries are based upon individual qualifications and professional experience. A full benefits package is available, which includes retirement, Thrift Savings Plan participation, health and life insurance.
